Swine flu warning as second wave hits the north


A leading health professional says not enough Australians are getting the swine flu vaccination and the country needs to act now to avoid a second wave of the disease.

Professor Robert Booy, the head of clinical research at the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance, says a second wave of the potentially deadly virus has already hit much of the northern hemisphere.

"Now the northern hemisphere's already in its second wave it didn't have vaccine in time to get on top of it - we do," he said.

"We've got a real opportunity and given that so many Australians pop over to the northern hemisphere over Christmas and can bring the virus back with them, there's a real risk we could have an early start to swine flu all over again."
